Why We Need To Be Humble?

This poster above stated six reasons of why we should be humble.

Firstly, to be humble, we need to know first the definition of humility. Humality is the feeling or attitude that you have no special importance that makes you better than others or having a lack of pride.

  1. Allah’s commandment

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,

Surah Al-Furqan 25:63

Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.

Surah Al-A’raf 7:55

  1. People feel comfortable and valued around you

Humility is an extremely attractive quality. When you demonstrate humility, others feel valued and enjoy their time with you. When you exude ego, those around you either feel inferior or just find you annoying.

  1. Recognize and realize when doing mistake

You can see when you are wrong and do something about it. Recognizing and admitting to yourself when you are wrong can be difficult. One of our biggest barriers to progress is always thinking we’re right. We’re not. It’s good to be confident in your knowledge and convicted in your beliefs, but not to the extent of blindness to your faults. Approaching life with an attitude of humility makes you more conscious and accepting of the mistakes you make, and gives you the strength to dust yourself off and move forward.

  1. Can positively influence other

As a manager, teacher, leader, or even a friend, if you want to have a lasting, positive impact on others you need to practice humility. If you are humble, everything you say will be able to influence others. But when you talk arrogantly and push everyone to accept your ideas, you don’t help others learn. Your words will have little influence if you talk like you’re the second coming. But you must also note that, if you want to positively influence others, being humble must be supported with confidence. Therefore, we are advised to speak with care and humility and with that, your message is likely to stick.

  1. Increase the desire to learn

When you have the humility to acknowledge how little you know, you’ll want to learn more. There’s a vast amount of information out there and countless skills to master. Pride in what you already know gives you little motivation to explore deeper. But when you contextualize your understanding of the world and appreciate how far you have left to go, you create a healthy desire to learn more.

Example: Aristotle said, “the more you know, the more you realize you don’t know” that is because when you learn something new or deeper, you will realize that what you learned is only a little dot in an ocean.

  1. Able to cope better with criticism

When you’re criticized, your ego takes a hit. Being humble allows you to limit the impact.

Having the humility to recognize & acknowledge that you aren’t good at everything and that as you go through life you will make mistakes and learn from them, allows you to receive criticism by learning important values or lessons from it instead of being in denial and arrogant

Example: When you are in workplace especially, being humble will allow you to handle criticism by learning from it and gain new knowledge and experience.

However, if you dont practice humility, your ego will refuse to see it.

To sum up, humility should be practiced by us especially as Muslims in our daily lives because it is a value that has always been mentioned in Islam and has always been shown by our role model, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and if we arent, we are indeed just following the whispers of iblis, the epitome of arrogance and pride that is loathed by Allah swt.
